Science | USB Versions and Transfer Speeds Explained
From 1.0 to USB4 - what do all those version numbers really mean?
Industry Knowledge | 2026-10-26
When shopping for USB cables, have you ever been confused by labels like USB 3.0, USB 3.1, and USB 3.2? Don't worry - it's not just you. The USB-IF organization has done quite a bit of "rebranding" over the years. Let's clear up the real differences between USB versions.
What many people call "USB 3.0" was renamed to "USB 3.1 Gen 1" in 2013, and then renamed again to "USB 3.2 Gen 1." In other words, USB 3.0 = USB 3.1 Gen 1 = USB 3.2 Gen 1 - they're all the same 5Gbps standard with different names. Marketers often exploit this by labeling old 5Gbps products as "USB 3.2" to sound newer and better.
USB Version | Theoretical Speed | Typical Read Speed | Common Uses |
USB 2.0 | 480Mbps | 30-40 MB/s | Keyboards, mice, charging cables |
USB 3.2 Gen1 | 5Gbps | 100-300 MB/s | Flash drives, HDDs, phone data |
USB 3.2 Gen2 | 10Gbps | 500-900 MB/s | SSD drives, docks, hubs |
USB4 / Thunderbolt 4 | 40Gbps | 3000-4000 MB/s | Thunderbolt docks, eGPU, 8K video |
The simplest rule: look for the actual speed number, not just the version name. Legitimate products will clearly state "5Gbps," "10Gbps," or "40Gbps." If it only says "USB 3.2" without a specific speed, it's most likely the entry-level 5Gbps version.
Important: theoretical speed and actual transfer speed are not the same thing. Theoretical speed is measured in bits per second (bps), while real-world transfer speed is usually measured in megabytes per second (MB/s) - and 1 byte = 8 bits. After accounting for protocol overhead and device performance, real speeds are roughly 1/10 of the theoretical rate. For example, a 5Gbps USB 3.0 connection typically delivers around 300MB/s in real use.
Buying tip: Choose based on your actual needs. For everyday charging and small files, USB 2.0 is fine. For large files and external drives, go with USB 3.2 Gen2 (10Gbps). For pro users and Thunderbolt devices, choose USB4/Thunderbolt 4 (40Gbps).
