Science | What Is a Full-Feature Type-C Cable?
Charging, data, and video - the three key functions of Type-C
Industry Knowledge | 2026-10-30
Two Type-C cables might look identical, but one can fast-charge your phone, one can transfer data at high speed, and one can even drive a monitor. But some Type-C cables do absolutely nothing when you plug them into a display. Why? The answer lies in the term full-feature. Let explain what a full-feature Type-C cable really is.
A complete Type-C data cable should support three main functions: charging, data transfer, and video output. That is what we call full-feature.
Charging: Supports USB PD fast charging, up to 240W. Requires thick enough power conductors and an E-Marker chip (for 3A+).
Data: Supports high-speed data transfer, ranging from USB 2.0 at 480Mbps all the way to USB4 at 40Gbps. Requires high-speed signal pairs and proper shielding.
Video: Supports DP Alt Mode or Thunderbolt video output for external displays and docks. Requires dedicated high-speed lanes.
Many cheap Type-C cables only support charging, or charging plus USB 2.0 data. They simply do not have enough internal conductors - they are missing the high-speed signal pairs and video channels needed for video output.
To put it simply: a charge-only Type-C cable might have only 2 power wires inside. A USB 2.0 Type-C cable has 4-5 cores. But a full-feature Type-C cable has 9 or more conductors, plus shielding layers and an E-Marker chip - a much more complex (and expensive) construction.
1. Check product specs: Legitimate products clearly list supported functions - PD charging + USB 3.2 data + 4K video output, for example. Be suspicious if it just says Type-C.
2. Check the price: Full-feature Type-C cables, with their many conductors and complex construction, usually cost 8 or more. A 2 Type-C cable is almost certainly not full-feature.
3. Check certification: USB-IF certified cables tend to have reliable specifications.
4. Test it: The most direct method - plug it into a Type-C monitor or dock and see what happens.
Shopping tip: If you just need to charge your phone, a basic Type-C cable is fine. If you need data transfer or a docking station, make absolutely sure you are buying a full-feature Type-C cable.
