Science | USB PD Fast Charging Basics: How Does It Actually Work?
From 5V to 240W - understanding the PD protocol
Industry Knowledge | 2026-10-28
Today phone chargers routinely hit 65W, 100W, even 240W - charging speeds that would have been unthinkable a decade ago. But have you ever wondered how fast charging actually works? Why do some cables support fast charging while others dont? Let explore the USB PD protocol.
PD stands for USB Power Delivery - a fast-charging standard developed by the USB-IF. The core idea is that the charger and device communicate through the USB cable and dynamically adjust voltage and current based on the device needs, enabling faster charging.
Traditional USB charging uses a fixed 5V at up to 2A - that is only 10W. The PD protocol supports multiple voltage levels, up to 48V/5A = 240W, dramatically increasing charging speed.
For PD fast charging to work, all three components must support the PD protocol - the charger, the cable, and the device itself.
Charger: Must support PD and be able to output the required voltage and current.
Cable: Must have sufficient wire gauge for high current. Cables rated above 3A also need an E-Marker chip.
Device: The phone/laptop charging IC must support the PD protocol.
Under the PD protocol, when current exceeds 3A (power above 60W), the cable needs a built-in E-Marker chip. This chip tells the charger: This cable can safely handle 5A - you can go ahead and deliver full power. Without an E-Marker chip, the charger will only output at 3A or below.
That is why a so-called 100W fast-charging cable without an E-Marker will never actually charge at 100W - it will top out at around 60W.
The PD 3.1 specification released in 2021 raised the maximum power to 240W (48V/5A), known as EPR (Extended Power Range). This means USB-C can now power not just phones and laptops, but also monitors and small appliances.
Buying fast-charging cables: 1. Know the power level you need. 2. Check the wire gauge (AWG 20 or better recommended). 3. Confirm it has an E-Marker chip (required for 65W+). 4. Prefer USB-IF PD certified products.
