Science | USB Versions and Transfer Speeds Explained

From 1.0 to USB4 - what do all those version numbers really mean?

Industry Knowledge | 2026-10-26

When shopping for USB-cables, have you ever been confused by labels like USB 3.0, USB 3.1, and USB 3.2? Don't worry - it's not just you. The USB-IF organization has done quite a bit of \"rebranding\" over the years. Let's clear up the real differences between USB versions.

What many people call \"USB 3.0\" was renamed to \"USB 3.1 Gen 1\" in 2013, and then renamed again to \"USB-3.2 Gen 1.\" In other words, USB-3.0 = USB 3.1 Gen 1 = USB 3.2 Gen 1 - they're all the same 5Gbps standard with different names. Marketers often exploit this by labeling old 5Gbps products as \"USB 3.2\" to sound newer and better.

When shopping for USB cables, look for the actual speed number, not just the version name. Legitimate products will clearly state \"5Gbps,\" \"10Gbps,\" or \"40Gbps.\"

Important: theoretical speed and actual transfer speed are not the same thing. After accounting for protocol overhead and device performance, real speeds are roughly 1/10 of the theoretical rate.
